Explore the art of creating visual books for children, with renowned illustrator and author Jane Ray

Date and times: Saturday 9 November 2013, 10am-5pm

Overview

Whether you want to produce an original best-seller, craft a personalised gift or simply to immortalise a homespun bedtime favourite for your own offspring, this one-day course will be a richly rewarding experience. No previous experience as a writer or artist is necessary – in this practical course, Smarties Prize-winning author Jane Ray shows you how to get started, how to explore your personal style, how to develop your characters and the world in which they live through words and pictures, and how to structure your story professionally. With plenty of time to accommodate questions and feedback, by the end of the day, you'll have the skills and confidence you need to finish a story your own way.

Students are welcome to bring work in progress, or you can start on something entirely new. There will also be the opportunity to look at the sketchbooks, roughs and original artwork of tutor Jane Ray.

Tutor profile

Jane Ray has been making picture books for children for the last 25 years. She started out as an illustrator but has written more and more over the years and finds it equally satisfying to illustrate her own or other people's stories. She has run courses for people wanting to create picture books at the Centre for the Childrens Book in Newcastle. She also does illustration sessions in schools and at festivals, both with children and teachers.
