Intermediate Digital SLR photography with Sebastian Meyer

Overview

There's much more to being a photographer than simply knowing your way around a Digital SLR.

This intensive two-day masterclass will teach you about the mechanics of assignment photography, from how to interpret a brief to editing your images down to a final selection.

Award-winning Guardian photographer Sebastian Meyer will guide you through the essential skills of the professionals, including how to approach potential subjects, how to edit a shoot and how to caption images.

You'll then gain shoot a series of external assignments based on genuine newspaper commissions, giving you practical experience of working to a brief and shooting in real-world conditions. For the final part of the day, Meyer will provide personalised feedback for all attendees, to help you identify directions for future learning. A must for the budding photojournalist.

Sessions will include:

  • Introduction to assignment photography
  • How to interpret a brief
  • How to shoot an assignment
  • How to approach different subjects and approach them
  • How to edit a shoot
  • How to caption photographs

This course is for you if...

You want to learn how to photograph professionally for newspapers and magazines. All students must have a full understanding of their Digital SLR and be able to shoot comfortably in the manual mode. Owning a laptop with Photoshop is preferred, but not mandatory.

Tutor profile


Sebastian Meyer
was born and raised in New York. In 2009 he moved to Iraq where he currently lives, working as a freelance photojournalist and editor of Metrography, the first Iraqi photo agency. Sebastian's photographs have been published in the New York Times, Time Magazine, Sunday Times Magazine, Telegraph, Guardian, Washington Post, and many other international publications. His documentary videos appear on Time.com, Guardian.co.uk. VOA, and PBS. He has won a number of awards including: Magenta Flash Forward Emerging Photographer, FotoVisura Grant for Outstanding Personal Photography Project, and Documentary Category at the Exposure Awards.

Dress code: There is no dress code for Masterclasses. Please dress however you feel comfortable.

Returns policy

Tickets may be refunded if you contact us at least 28 days before the course start date. After this time, up to 7 days before the course start date we may accept tickets and attempt to resell them on your behalf if the event is sold out. If the ticket is resold you will receive a refund of the ticket price, minus an administration fee equal to 10% of the ticket price. We cannot offer any refunds or attempt to resell your ticket less than 7 days before the course start date.
