An inspiring and revealing introduction to self-publishing from leading industry experts and authors
This masterclass is run in association with the University of Salford
Overview
Self-publishing may seem like the easiest route to getting your manuscript into print, as well as potentially the most lucrative. But being your own publisher means being your own editor, designer, PR, distributor and marketing department too.
This comprehensive one-day course offers advice on all the finer points of self-publishing. From self-editing your manuscript to managing your costs (and projecting your profits), plus essential tips on how to promote your work, get inside knowledge from a panel of experts, including former publisher and course leader for MA Publishing at Kingston University, Dr Alison Baverstock, GETpublished.tv's Ed Peppitt, and Nick Sidwel from Guardian Books.
Course content
The masterclass will cover:
• The book marketplace
• The economics of self-publishing
• The publishing process
• Selling your book
It will be applicable to fiction and non-fiction, printed and ebooks. There will be passing mention of photobooks, but it will not be a specific or central part of the content or any session.
Tutor profiles
Dr Alison Baverstock is Course Leader for MA Publishing at Kingston University. A former publisher, she has researched and written widely about the publishing industry, and is much quoted in the media. Of late her particular research interest has been self-publishing and she is the author of The Naked Author – a guide to self-publishing (Bloomsbury) as well as a range of academic papers. Her work has challenged traditional notions of self-publishing as a last resort for the untalented – and revealed how the processes of self-publishing can benefit a range of different content providers, according to their desired outcomes. You may not become rich in the process, but her research has identified consistently strong levels of satisfaction in self-publishing – and the desire to both recommend it to others and do it again.
Edward Peppitt worked in publishing for twenty years before founding Balloon View, a publisher of business and personal development books and courses. He consults for the publishing industry, and also teaches and coaches writers to get their book published profitably and successfully. He runs seminars and workshops every year, helping authors to get their books published effectively and selling profitably.
JD Smith lives and works in the English Lake District. Having worked as a graphic designer for over twelve years, her passion for books and everything literary took over and she now works predominantly on book cover design and typesetting. She is the editor of the writer and publisher e-zine Words with JAM, a member of the Triskele Books group, and is the author of Tristan and Iseult.
Nick Sidwell is the Digital Publishing Manager for Guardian Books. He has previously worked for independent publisher Elliott & Thompson, and Icon Books.
