This masterclass is run in association with the University of Salford.

Overview

This is surely the best possible start for the aspiring playwright. This hands-on two-day course offers a unique and inspiring opportunity to work with two award-winning theatre talents to take your writing from the page to the stage.

Tutors Elizabeth Newman, associate director at the Octagon Theatre Bolton, and writer/producer Jennifer Tuckett are renowned for their nurturing of new talent. This comprehensive course offers instruction in the fundamentals of structure, storytelling, and writing naturalistic dialogue which will bring your characters to life. Most excitingly, you'll get practical experience of working with directors and actors to stage scenes from your script, so you can see how your writing works in a live theatre environment.

Class size has been kept small to ensure you receive feedback and tuition tailored to your specific needs, aims and voice. By the end of the course, you'll have written the beginnings of an original play and acquired the skills and confidence you need to see it through to the end.

Tutor profiles

Elizabeth Newman is the associate director at the Octagon Theatre Bolton and a winner of the Writers Guild Award for the Encouragement of New Writing. She runs the new writing department, co-ordinates the supplementary season of events and activities and directs main auditorium productions at the Octagon Theatre. Her role at the theatre also includes developing creative partnerships and managing professional placements. Since being at the Octagon Theatre Bolton, Elizabeth has directed Sweeney Todd, David Copperfield, The Wonderful World of Oz, Should Love Hurt this Much?, The Nose, A Thing Called Love Season, White Nights, Smoking is Bad for You, Seven Jewish Children, First Dates Season, The Queen of the North, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice and Poetry on a Plate Recitals.

Jennifer Tuckett is an award winning writer, producer and academic who has pioneered new methods of industry partnered creative writing teaching in the UK. Her plays include 'Kidnapping Cameron' (Birmingham Repertory Theatre), 'I am a Superhero' (joint winner, Old Vic New Voices Theatre 503 Award), 'Ways You Can Survive the World' (Theatre 503), 'Lucy's Brief Guide on How to be Human' (Old Vic New Voices 24 Hour Plays) "After The Flood" (Old Vic Theatre) and "The Love Inn" (Octagon Theatre Bolton). Jennifer has an MFA in Playwriting from Yale School of Drama, an MA in Creative Writing (Scriptwriting) from the University of East Anglia and a BA (Hons) in English from Cambridge University. Jennifer founded the UK's first industry partnered MA in Playwriting with the Royal Exchange Theatre, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse and Octagon Theatre Bolton and has run unique industry partnered creative writing projects with BBC Writersroom, BBC Radio Drama North and various theatres.

Dress code: There is no dress code for Masterclasses. Please dress however you feel comfortable.

Returns policy
Tickets may be refunded if you contact us at least 28 days before the course start date. After this time, up to 7 days before the course start date we may accept tickets and attempt to resell them on your behalf if the event is sold out. If the ticket is resold you will receive a refund of the ticket price, minus an administration fee equal to 10% of the ticket price. We cannot offer any refunds or attempt to resell your ticket less than 7 days before the course start date.
